Why do we celebrate Presidents' Day?

Yesterday, the Unites States celebrated the Federal holiday called Presidents' Day. The holiday, created in 1880, almost 100 years after his presidency, by the United States Congress, was created to honor the first President of the United States, George Washington. The holiday was called Washington's Birthday and was appropriately celebrated on Washington's real birthday, February 22nd. It wasn't until 1971, when Congress decided to move this national holiday to its present day, which is the third Monday of February.Washington's Birthday falls just ten days after another famous President's birthday. A man who was pivotal in the abolishment of slavery-President Abraham Lincoln. Abe Lincoln ,the 16th President of the United States, was born on February 12, 1809. Although Lincoln's birthday is not considered a national holiday, some states in the US have declared his birthday a state holiday. In the mid-90's, New York state decided to give their students the entire week off to celebrate both Lincoln and Washington's birthday.
